For a brand marketed as nothin’ but ‘super premium’ grub, USA company Purina Pro Plan hides a doozy of an ingredients list behind flashy photography and steep prices.

Purina Pro Plan is seriously grain heavy, with no percentages to show you exactly how much grain vs. meat protein goes in (unlike Scratch). Instead of using high-quality grain sources – like brown rice, oats or chia – they’ve loaded their recipes full of inflammatory ingredients like brewers rice and wheat. Far from ideal if your best mate has sensitive skin or an easily upset tum.

Their ingredients list is packed full of mystery meats, with vague labelling like ‘animal fat’, ‘animal digest’ and ‘poultry by-product meal’ – the stuff made up from slaughterhouse waste and carcass leftovers. Yummo.
