The majority of Aussie dogs eat dry dog food (or kibble) as part or all of their diet, but it turns out that a lot of it isnât doing old mate any good.
Not because dry dog food is bad â thatâs just the way itâs prepared â but because big dog food companies often do things on the cheap, using high GI ingredients, straight in/straight out fillers, and very little actual meat (plus additives so it lasts longer on supermarket shelves). Eaten regularly, this gets your wooferâs body out of whack and can cause short-term upset and long-term illness.

Dry dog food for Whippets is the most convenient, preserved by dehydration and receives a quick temperature kill-step to ensure all microorganisms are eliminated.

Raw food
Raw food diets are great as they have no processing, but it can be hard to get a complete and balanced diet from raw food alone. It also has other drawbacks like being fresh only for a few days, potential microorganisms such as e-coli, salmonella etc. Cooked protein is also easier to digest than raw.
Wet food
Wet dog food is processed at a high temperature for a long period while sealed to ensure that all micro-organisms are killed. It generally tastes great but contains mostly water and a lot of gelling agents to make the gravy. The term âwhat goes in comes outâ applies well to wet food, and can be the culprit for less-than-ideal number 2s.
Freeze-dried food
Freeze-dried grub is generally higher quality than a lot of the dog food out there, but comes with its own drawbacks. Freeze-drying alone isnât an effective way to kill all pathogens, so carries similar risks to raw. Itâs also crazy expensive.
Or chilled food?

I’ve been struggling with my whippet who’s quite a fussy eater! I’ve tried at least 20 kinds of kibble before now, and the longest she’s shown interest in any of them is 2-3 days. I’d all but given up on finding a kibble she would eat, but thought I’d give Scratch a go. My fussy girl’s been on Scratch 2 weeks now, and gobbled it up every day. Yay, success at last… I can hardly believe it!!
