Dog treat bag

Try a food topper.

Some really fussy dogs might need a bit more enticing. A food topper is a great way to keep feeding them a nutritious main meal, with a bit of bonus flavour.

We’ve had some great success with fusspot dogs by adding a bit of warm water, and letting the kibble soak! This really brings out the aromas and can help spice up the food. Or for a bigger flavour step-up, you could try a spoonful of:

Fresh meat, raw or cooked to your dog’s preference.

Bone broth, yoghurt or sardine oil.

Healthy treats crumbled over the top.

Or the 15-minute rule!

Having structure and rules surrounding mealtime is really helpful for fussy dogs.

It’s recommended never to leave their meal down longer than 15 minutes, and especially never to pop down something ‘boring’ (i.e. plain kibble), and when they refuse it, don’t immediately offer something more tempting. To follow the 15 minute rule:

Pop your dog’s healthy dry food down for 15 minutes.

After 15 minutes, remove the bowl, no matter how much has been touched (or untouched!).

Don’t feed your dog anything (treats included!) until their next meal. Give their bowl of kibble back – rinse and repeat as necessary!

What our fussy customers have got to say –

Bernedoodle

Pawesomely tasty!

We have a year old Bernedoodle who is an extremely fussy eater and has a sensitive tummy. We can’t tell you how many different kibbles we went through that would always be left in her bowl. Scratch is the only food that that she licks the bowl clean with!

Best dog food out there

Absolutely love this dog food. It’s not only healthy for your dog, but your dog will love it too! My dog is fussy, but since using Scratch he has been a different dog. Definitely recommend Scratch.

Instant winner for my typically fussy boy!

I came across Scratch and became convinced that these guys were trying to make a difference in the pet food space. But the real hurdle would be the food and whether Stitch would eat it! Well he LOVED it! So I think it is safe to say that we are both pleased with Scratch, and will definitely continue to buy it!

Want to know more about fussy dogs?

There’s no single cause for picky eaters. Some dogs are just born that way!

Other picky eaters are created. We love our dogs, so if they’re not fussed on a food it’s easy for us to rush in and give them something more tempting. This very quickly teaches a dog that to get dessert, they just need to refuse dinner – whoops!

First, make sure you’re feeding a good-quality dog food that your dog will actually want to eat. Not all kibble is made equal.

Next, introduce some structure around mealtime like the 15-minute rule.

Some puppies grow out of fussy eating, just like some toddlers do. But if you’ve given in to their fussiness a bit too often, you can accidentally create an even fussier adult. 😶

It’s best to treat a fussy puppy like a fussy adult. Feed them a high-quality puppy food and keep boundaries around mealtime.

Lots of dry dog food is made in bulk, months ago, and kept on a shelf for ages before it makes it into your dog’s bowl.

Combine that with low-quality meat and you’ve got a pretty unappealing meal. We’d turn our nose up to it too!
