We've all heard of the furbaby movement, but we were curious to see if it was a real thing. 1 in 3 dog owners feel that having dogs reduced their desire for children - something that we saw similarly across all generations.

Summary:
  • 45% of our respondents had a dog join the family in the past 2 years
  • COVID influenced the decision of 36% of those
  • 12% of them sometimes regret it
  • 19% were rescued and 58% were brought home from a breeder
  • Half of us found raising a puppy easy. Half of us found it hard.

Dogs are well and truly part of the family

  • 2 out of every 3 Aussies have their dogs sleep in the room with them.
  • Dogs are pretty much kids, with over half of Australian dogs getting new toys monthly
  • We love dogs for their social nature and emotional intelligence but we were blown away to see how many dogs have their own friends

We were particularly interested in Australian attitudes towards dogs and their perceived role in society.

  • We couldn't believe how many of us believe that first-time dog owners should require mandatory education
  • Fancy a drink with your dog by your side? Dog people (which is about 40% of Australians) are ready to relax laws and allow dogs in more places where humans go
  • Half of us would take a pay cut to spend more time with our dogs
  • We've made progress, but most Aussie workplaces aren't dog-friendly

  • Half of us have had to switch foods because of it making our dogs sick
  • We turn to nutritional information on packaging to make the best decisions.
  • Yet, there is zero regulation on how brands display their information and the claims they can make.
  • The government needs to do more and finally create proper pet food regulation
