The majority of Aussie dogs eat dry dog food (or kibble) as part or all of their diet, but it turns out that a lot of it isn’t doing old mate any good.
Not because dry dog food is bad – that’s just the way it’s prepared – but because big dog food companies often do things on the cheap, using high GI ingredients, straight in/straight out fillers, and very little actual meat (plus additives so it lasts longer on supermarket shelves). Eaten regularly, this gets your woofer’s body out of whack and can cause short-term upset and long-term illness.
Scratch puts better ingredients in, and you get a healthier dog out. Pretty simple but business gets in the way. So, is dry dog food bad? No – much of it is but Scratch is the dry dog food should be.
Dry dog food for Border Collies is the most convenient, preserved by dehydration and receives a quick temperature kill-step to ensure all microorganisms are eliminated.
Raw food diets are great as they have no processing, but it can be hard to get a complete and balanced diet from raw food alone. It also has other drawbacks like being fresh only for a few days, potential microorganisms such as e-coli, salmonella etc. Cooked protein is also easier to digest than raw.
Wet dog food is processed at a high temperature for a long period while sealed to ensure that all micro-organisms are killed. It generally tastes great but contains mostly water and a lot of gelling agents to make the gravy. The term ‘what goes in comes out’ applies well to wet food, and can be the culprit for less-than-ideal number 2s.
Freeze-dried grub is generally higher quality than a lot of the dog food out there, but comes with its own drawbacks. Freeze-drying alone isn’t an effective way to kill all pathogens, so carries similar risks to raw. It’s also crazy expensive.
Like dry dog food, chilled dog food has the kill step to eradicate pathogens. It has a short shelf life and is often treated with a lot of preservatives to last the time from factory to home.

I moved Peggy my blue Merle border collie on to scratch food after almost three years of constant scratching with red raw skin. It was ongoing even with trying an elimination diet, cortisone shots & Apoqel tablets everyday. I ordered Scratch and we did the transition and after the first 4 kilo bag low & behold the redness on the belly went first and everyday brought more improvements. I’m gob smacked I can’t believe it everyday I roll her over expecting it to be red again after so long her tummy is like a smooth puppy again. Peggy must feel amazing too I’m sure of that. We put our dogs on scratch after they had some dietary issues / upset stomaches from feeding them their previous food. We noticed a MASSIVE improvement from feeding them Scratch – for one, our oldest dog (who is 7) seemed to almost act like a puppy again, she was super energetic and just seemed super happy – she is also hates dried dog food, but was more than happy to eat Scratch. Our youngest dog also loves the food and looks forward to each meal time. After a month on Scratch, we noticed such big improvement in both dogs.
We have a growing border collie pup, who came to us on a diet of Pedigree food. She loved Scratch so much that she needed no transition period, just straight into it. Her coat is shinier, her poops are way less smellier and Scratch really fills her up. We feed a mix of raw food and scratch, the website calculates everything for you and is so easy to use. Absolutely amazing customer service when my vet asked me to ask a few questions. And love the deliveries addressed to Daisy (pup). We also ordered the beef treats and she goes completely crazy for them!
