Golden Retrievers require delicate diet handling. It’s common in the breed to experience a host of intolerances and food allergies, and to be – in general – more sensitive than the average pup.
Scratch kicks allergies to the curb with none of the common food triggers… the most frequent being dairy (17%), chicken (15%) and wheat (13%).

The majority of Aussie dogs eat dry dog food (or kibble) as part or all of their diet, but it turns out that a lot of it isn’t doing old mate any good.
Not because dry dog food is bad – that’s just the way it’s prepared – but because big dog food companies often do things on the cheap, using high GI ingredients, straight in/straight out fillers, and very little actual meat (plus additives so it lasts longer on supermarket shelves). Eaten regularly, this gets your woofer’s body out of whack and can cause short-term upset and long-term illness.
Scratch puts better ingredients in, and you get a healthier dog out. Pretty simple but business gets in the way. So, is dry dog food bad? No – much of it is but Scratch is the dry dog food should be.
Raw food diets are great as they have no processing, but it can be hard to get a complete and balanced diet from raw food alone. It also has other drawbacks like being fresh only for a few days, potential microorganisms such as e-coli, salmonella etc. Cooked protein is also easier to digest than raw.
Wet dog food is processed at a high temperature for a long period while sealed to ensure that all micro-organisms are killed. It generally tastes great but contains mostly water and a lot of gelling agents to make the gravy. The term ‘what goes in comes out’ applies well to wet food, and can be the culprit for less-than-ideal number 2s.
Freeze-dried grub is generally higher quality than a lot of the dog food out there, but comes with its own drawbacks. Freeze-drying alone isn’t an effective way to kill all pathogens, so carries similar risks to raw. It’s also crazy expensive.
Like dry dog food, chilled dog food has the kill step to eradicate pathogens. It has a short shelf life and is often treated with a lot of preservatives to last the time from factory to home.

I had bought into Scratch initially for my 4.5 year old golden retriever as he has gone off his existing food – I believe from a change of recipe / ingredient. After find out of about Scratch from a couple of other GR owners, I switched over and the transition was easy. Barney’s coat is great, he has loads of energy and throughly enjoys his food.
Lily is an elderly girl and has always had a sensitive tummy to commercial dry foods making her a bit smelly at times and her legs were getting stiff. I heard about Scratch online and was really interested in the idea of food to suit her conditions it made sense and I wanted to see if it could help Lily who was just not enjoying meal times anymore. I slowly switched her over mixing scratch with some rice and she’s back looking forward to her food with even a bounce in her step and with no tummy troubles And for me there’s no more lugging home heavy dog food bags as it’s delivered to my door in lovely packaging couldn’t be happier. We’d been feeding our dogs home prepared raw food with the intention of just using Scratch in the morning. After not very long, we switched completely to Scratch. We found it difficult to get the balance right with raw and this lead to occasional upset stomachs. That’s completely disappeared with Scratch and our 8 year old Golden Retriever is happier, healthier and drools considerably, like he does for treats, for all of his meals now he loves Scratch that much. We’ve been feeding him vet recommended kibble for years, but we wouldn’t go back now. Thoroughly recommend Scratch to everyone.
