The best dog food for Labradors | Scratch Dog Food

Dog Food For Labradors

With tons of energy, large (and fast-growing) bones and a higher-chance of hip and joint issues than other breeds, the perfect Labrador dog food is high in quality meat protein, well balanced and low in inflammatory ingredients.

Scratch has helped thousands of Labradors thrive thanks to:

Using low-inflammation food without all the processing

Why do so many modern dogs suffer from skin & stomach issues? Cheap, powdered and over-processed ingredients are a common culprit. ‘Pet food meat’ is used in nearly every dog food out there, and is typically the lowest quality option (often with more bone and carcass than meat and organs).

Scratch uses meat from the human food supply chain and tops off each recipe with healthy oils for a resilient gut, shiny coat and tough immune system.

A tailored feeding guide for the perfect weight

Labs are stocky dogs with a (really) healthy appetite, making them prone to obesity. You don’t need Weight Watchers to help your woofer shed the kilos – just high-quality grub full of the good stuff, tailor-made to your dog.

Our calculator will whip up a personalised diet just for your dog – whether they need to lose, gain or maintain their weight.

Avoiding the ingredients causing most sensitivities

It’s common for Labradors to experience yeast infections, which present as itchy & irritated ears/skin. Yeast issues and allergies come hand in hand: as the skin and gut irritation can cause scratching and chewing, which then causes broken or irritated skin, which then causes bacteria… and the vicious cycle continues.

Scratch kicks allergies to the curb with none of the common food triggers… the most frequent being dairy (17%), chicken (15%) and wheat (13%).

Pouring dog food

Labradors should eat premium grub that caters to their sensitive skin, tummies and special dietary needs

Your dog’s food should be doing more than keeping them alive. It should be sustaining them with top-quality ingredients, cutting out filler and enriching their health with wholefoods.

Dry food, wet food, freshly prepared or home-cooked, most of the dog food brands out there miss the mark.

✅ Scratch is formulated by master qualified nutritionists to meet all the nutritional requirements dog food for Labradors needs, as set out in the AAFCO guidelines

✅ Each recipe is chockfull of premium, human-grade meat and real veggies (not powdered crap)

✅ Sustain your Lab all day with low-GI energy sources… rather than burning and crashing

Freshly made, low-processed kibble that’s actually good for your dog

The majority of Aussie dogs eat dry dog food (or kibble) as part or all of their diet, but it turns out that a lot of it isn’t doing old mate any good.

Not because dry dog food is bad – that’s just the way it’s prepared – but because big dog food companies often do things on the cheap, using high GI ingredients, straight in/straight out fillers, and very little actual meat (plus additives so it lasts longer on supermarket shelves). Eaten regularly, this gets your woofer’s body out of whack and can cause short-term upset and long-term illness.

Scratch puts better ingredients in, and you get a healthier dog out. Pretty simple but business gets in the way. So, is dry dog food bad? No – much of it is but Scratch is the dry dog food should be.

Read more about our kibble philosophy

Why kibble vs. raw food, chilled food or freeze-dried food?

Dry dog food for Labradors is the most convenient, preserved by dehydration and receives a quick temperature kill-step to ensure all microorganisms are eliminated.

Compare Scratch to:

ingredients-meat illustration

Raw food

Raw food diets are great as they have no processing, but it can be hard to get a complete and balanced diet from raw food alone. It also has other drawbacks like being fresh only for a few days, potential microorganisms such as e-coli, salmonella etc. Cooked protein is also easier to digest than raw.

Wet food

Wet dog food is processed at a high temperature for a long period while sealed to ensure that all micro-organisms are killed. It generally tastes great but contains mostly water and a lot of gelling agents to make the gravy. The term ‘what goes in comes out’ applies well to wet food, and can be the culprit for less-than-ideal number 2s.

Freeze-dried food

Freeze-dried grub is generally higher quality than a lot of the dog food out there, but comes with its own drawbacks. Freeze-drying alone isn’t an effective way to kill all pathogens, so carries similar risks to raw. It’s also crazy expensive.

Or chilled food?

Like dry dog food, chilled dog food has the kill step to eradicate pathogens. It has a short shelf life and is often treated with a lot of preservatives to last the time from factory to home.

Don’t just take our word for it!

Keep up the good work guys.

I own two Labradors. Typically, this breed will – and does – eat anything. The choice to switch to Scratch (despite the highbrow name) came about after seeing the benefits of a raw diet supplemented with good quality kibble. My dogs would eat shoelaces and call it spaghetti and they do love Scratch, but the overall benefits for them – and me – is a healthy stool, zero dog breath, glossy coat and happy, healthy dogs. The ease of online ordering with automated repeat delivery is so good. Keep up the good work guys; our pets deserve nothing less.

She eats as soon as her bowl hits the ground!

Our chocolate Labrador Lanie wasn’t overly interested in her previous kibble and would sometimes not eat her breakfast until dinner which is super weird for a Lab. We knew we had to make a change and as soon as we started the transition to Scratch she instantly started eating as soon as her bowl hit the ground!

We have no regrets!

Switching over to Scratch has been simple and we have no regrets. Our Labrador puppy is doing normal poos again and is super happy. The customer service is awesome and the regular deliveries are so handy.
