Built like a brick sh*thouse applies to most Staffies. Small, stocky little things, they’re prone to overfeeding. Weight gain is even easier on high-carb foods, and most of the grub out there is chock full of carbohydrates (sometimes 60% or more!).
Scratch has low carb recipes, as little at 32.5% – and considerably less carbs than most other brands. The carbs we do have all come from nutritious, low-GI sources of energy that sustain your dog all day.
Staffies are sturdy but surprisingly sensitive little dogs. It’s common in the breed to experience a host of intolerances and food allergies, and to be – in general – more sensitive than the average pup.
Scratch kicks allergies to the curb with none of the common food triggers… the most frequent being dairy (17%), chicken (15%) and wheat (13%).
Why do so many modern dogs suffer from skin & stomach issues? Cheap, powdered and over-processed ingredients are a common culprit. ‘Pet food meat’ is used in nearly every dog food out there, and is typically the lowest quality option (often with more bone and carcass than meat and organs).
Scratch uses human grade meat and tops off each recipe with healthy oils and extra vitamins for a resilient gut, shiny coat and tough immune system.

Not because dry dog food is bad – that’s just the way it’s prepared – but because big dog food companies do things on the cheap, using high GI ingredients, straight in/straight out fillers, and very little actual meat (plus additives so it lasts longer on supermarket shelves). Eaten regularly, this gets your woofer’s body out of whack and can cause short-term upset and long-term illness.
Scratch puts better ingredients in, and you get a healthier dog out. Pretty simple but business gets in the way. So, is dry dog food bad? No – much of it is but Scratch is the dry dog food should be.

Raw food diets are great as they have no processing, but it can be hard to get a complete and balanced diet from raw food alone. It also has other drawbacks like being fresh only for a few days, potential microorganisms such as e-coli, salmonella etc. Cooked protein is also easier to digest than raw.
Wet dog food is processed at a high temperature for a long period while sealed to ensure that all micro-organisms are killed. It generally tastes great but contains mostly water and a lot of gelling agents to make the gravy. The term ‘what goes in comes out’ applies well to wet food, and can be the culprit for less-than-ideal number 2s.
Freeze-dried grub is generally higher quality than a lot of the dog food out there, but comes with its own drawbacks. Freeze-drying alone isn’t an effective way to kill all pathogens, so carries similar risks to raw. It’s also crazy expensive.
Like dry dog food, chilled dog food has the kill step to eradicate pathogens. It has a short shelf life and is often treated with a lot of preservatives to last the time from factory to home.

Since they’re prone to weight gain, it’s natural that many Staffy owners gravitate towards special ‘weight loss’ formulas. Although this makes sense, it usually limits your dog to bland, tasteless, low-nutrient grub just designed to fill your dog up.

Unlike Noona, we love to know where our food comes from and what’s in it, so as dog parents, we’ve really appreciated how transparent Scratch’s supply chain is. Would recommend to anyone with a four-legged friend and questionable poops.
Our 6 month old Staffy had always been super gassy on her previous dry food. She could clear a room in seconds and it was happening very frequently. Since we’ve fully transitioned her over to Scratch we have barely noticed any nasty smells exiting our gorgeous pup. Plus she absolutely loves the food, and was actually picking out the Scratch food to eat first over her old dry food during the transition to Scratch.
